What are they?
Mobile phones (commonly referred to as cell phones in the United States) are long-range handheld telecommunications devices. They are used not only for voice communication, like a standard landline, but can also communicate using video messaging, text messaging (SMS- short messaging service) and media messaging (MMS- multimedia messaging service) and emails. Modern mobile phones also offer additional functionality, including FM radio, GPS (global positioning system), the ability to play MP3s and videos, as well as supporting a range of games and applications.
How many are there?
There were over 4.1 billion handsets registered globally in 2008- a number which continues to rise as the range of handsets and cheap contract deals increases as mobile networks expand. Nearly everybody these days has one or more mobile telephones, and the increasing network coverage and availability of low-budget handsets has meant that they are not just restricted to the wealthy or indeed the first world.
What are smartphones?
Smartphones reach beyond the capabilities of a standard mobile phone and offer users PC-like functionality. They often run their own operating system, such as Google Android, Symbian OS, RIM BlackBerry, Linux, Palm OS or Microsoft Windows Mobile. Because of this, they often support similar (but somewhat cut-down) versions of programs you would expect to find as software on a computer. Modern smartphones such as the HTC Touch HD have Wi-Fi, a fully functional media player, web browser, office applications and video camera. In addition to this, they offer extensive storage space with additional space available through compact flash/SD/Micro SD etc. Some smartphones (such as the Touch HD) contain internal GPS receivers and support accurate positioning on programs such as Google Maps.
